- Blog Tour – The Refrain by Ashley Pullo

Their paths have crossed, setting the refrain in motion.

Ever since flannel and Doc Martens were considered edgy fashion, Canadian cousins Natalie and Chloe have dreamt of a life in New York City. But now that they’ve finally scored a Manhattan zip code, their teenaged fantasies are overshadowed by an adult reality. With Natalie struggling to accept a long-distance relationship—and her constant battle with loneliness, her survival depends on Zach’s safe return. And with Chloe’s endless need to find balance and purpose—and her embarrassing secret holding her back, can Adam Ford be the one to understand her completely?

Change is inevitable and fate is insisting. And when panic follows crisis and love is questioned, stories can change in unexpected ways. The narrative becomes the verse, the part to the whole—the story within the story.

Slamming her hand against the keys to the piano, Chloe shouts, “Who is she?”

“The client is a forty-seven year old man.”

“Not the client, who are you fucking?” Chloe demands, her voice deep and raw.
Adam takes two steps closer, glaring down at Chloe’s pitiful face. “I’m not fucking anyone.  Not even my wife,” he snarls.  It’s the answer Chloe needs to hear, but not the one she wants.
She moves a step closer and pokes his chest. “Then explain this to me.”
“Explain what?”
“This—this tension.  Why don’t I trust you?  Why am I so angry—where the fuck have you been?”  Chloe’s voice is dry and emotional, the words stinging her throat and falling from her mouth like hot embers. She punches his arm, hits his chest, and slaps at his smug expression.
Adam grabs her arms, his fingers digging into her flesh, but Chloe fights him. “Stop it,” he says.  Chloe continues to wave her arms, desperately trying to break herself free.  Adam tightens his grip and twists her arm behind her back, controlling her…controlling her behavior.  “I have a career.  Do you understand that?  I’m working, I’m being a provider, I’m being a dad—doing the right thing.”
With as much contempt as she can gather, she shouts, “The right thing?  The right thing—your life is just one blob of obligation now?  Fuck you, Adam.  Always trying to be perfect—always doing the right thing.  We wouldn’t want anyone to know what you really are!”
“What does that mean?”  Adam eases his grip, upset by her threat.
“You’re a wall.”  Chloe yanks her arms free and shoves Adam’s chest.  “A fucking brick wall—no emotion and no attachment to anything that doesn’t fit your definition of right or wrong.  I’m sick of it!” Chloe’s voice is shaky and inaudible, tears suddenly drowning her words.
“Really?”  He smirks.  “You need me.  You need me to be your wall—you need an excuse to be destructive.  But then when you need that brick wall again, who’s supposed to build it?”
Chloe grits her teeth and holds her breath, rage setting in.  “You’re a fucking asshole.  God, you’re so arrogant—fuck you.”  Chloe shoves past Adam, running straight to the front door.  She hesitates momentarily to study her bare feet but then impulsively decides to run out into the summer rain.  She wants to run away, she wants to feel that sense of purpose again.  Adam follows behind her, shouting her name.  He’s enraged and bewildered—this is why he loves her—this is why she needs him.
“Chloe stop.”  Adam catches up to her and grabs her hand, yanking her in his direction.  The raindrops conceal her tears, there’s no end to one and a beginning of another—no separation of pain and passion.  Possibly the secret to any great romance…passion evolves from pain.
Adam takes Chloe in his arms and forces her against the large maple tree.  The fullness of the branches protects them from the rain, but their emotions are completely exposed and unrefined.
Chloe sobs, jerking her hand from his tight grasp.  “Leave me alone.”
“No,” he responds.
Adam pins her against the tree, slamming his hands above her shoulders.  They stare into each other’s eyes—carnal lust brimming with each sensation, old and new…this is one of those moments.  Chloe’s chest rises and falls.  Rain splatters against the tree.  Adam’s lips quiver with need.  Eyes wander over familiar features.  Drip drop—it’s rhythm.
And then, associating pain with passion, Chloe bites Adam’s lower lip—sucking and licking the delicate, rain-kissed skin.  Adam’s hand moves to her neck, squeezing gently to signify his control.  He kisses her, deep and satisfying, absorbing every last drop of painful doubt from her mind.  Chloe’s arms move to his shoulders, grasping…searching…
Words are meaningless.  Words are breathless.
“Adam.”
Adam releases his hold, but not his authority.  In a hasty, yet sensual effort, he lifts Chloe into his arms—positioning one arm under her legs and the other tightly around her back.
“Shut up.” He commands with a smile.
And just like Rhett Butler seizing Scarlett O’Hara with passionate fury, Adam reclaims Chloe. Under the pouring rain.  Up the steps of the ironed stoop.  Through the door of their centuries-old brownstone.  Dripping wet.  Hearts racing.  Souls connecting.

…and then he slams the door.

When I wake up in a dark, unfamiliar room, I have no idea what’s waiting for me in the shadows. My imagination conjures up demons of the worst kind.
Reality is much worse:
A collar with no leash. A prison with no walls. And a life stripped of meaning.
I am presented with a vile contract and asked to sign. It outlines the terms of my servitude. The only information I have about my captor are the two small letters inked at the bottom: J.S.

Armed with only my memories, I must do everything I can to avoid becoming ensnared in his twisted mind games. But in the end, it all comes down to one choice:

Resist and die.
Or submit, and sign my life away.

✦ Blog Tour & Giveaway ✦ Sin for Love by Claudia Bradshaw

Tessa “Rain” Donahue believed she was happy. Dancing in a burlesque show at the ‘Happy Valley Cabaret’ gave her a sense of power. Shots of tequila gave her courage. One-night-stands gave her variety. Her nights usually ended as the sun was rising. Her head held high as she walked away from a stranger’s warm bed, high heels in hand. Tessa thought she had all she ever wanted.

Reese Nichols, owner of the custom motorcycle shop ‘Deadly Seven’, was living his dream. He was his own boss, never having to answer to anyone. To him, money was no object. What he lacked, however, was something that money couldn’t buy. Reese woke up every morning knowing she was out there—his soul mate. One drunken night years ago Reese met Madame Miranda, the carnival fortune teller who instructed him on how to find the one who was meant for him. With his plan in place, Reese searched for the only one who could pass the test. Tragedy kept Reese and Tessa from realizing their fate years ago. Destiny brought them back together for another chance. Would Reese recognize that she was something special? Would Tessa figure out that it was all a test? Through it all, would they both sin for love?

I heard the drums start to boom and I knew it was time for Ginger to start her solo. She was one of my favorites to watch, and I had learned so much from her since I’d started dancing. She had a Jane of the Jungle theme this month, complete with animal noises, a huge python, and a vine to swing from. It was really going well. I turned around to watch her, but what I found instead was someone watching me.
He was leaning up against the railing that overlooked the floor full of tables. While everyone else was staring at the stage he was staring at me. I let my eyes roam over him as he stood about fifteen feet away from me. He was wearing a black leather motorcycle jacket over a simple gray t-shirt, black jeans, and black boots. He must have been just over six feet tall and his shirt and jacket weren’t doing much to disguise what had to be an amazing body.
How is this shit even legal? I thought to myself. Shouldn’t he have to carry a badge or at least come with a warning that looking at him would lead to a bunch of conditions—increased heart rate, shallow breathing, panting like a dog, and instantly wet panties?
The drums for Ginger’s dance were pounding in my ears, and I swear they were speeding up to match my quickly increasing heart rate. When my gaze came back up to his face, I felt a sucker-punch to the chest that knocked the breath out of me. His eyes locked on to mine and it was like he was laying me open in front of him, like I couldn’t hide any part of myself from him. I had never felt so naked in my entire life even though I took off all of my clothes in front of a crowd four nights a week.
“Fuck me,” I sighed under my breath.

***This is a new adult contemporary novel and contains sexual content and graphic language. It is not intended for young adult readers.***
A tattoo gets them in trouble… He will get them out.
After years of cultivating an undercover identity, Brody West is finally off the case and free to live a life of his own. All that time spent in the company of criminals and killers left him a little jaded… and with an identity crisis. He isn’t sure who he is anymore, or who he wants to be.
To give him time to think, he takes a few days off to go fishing. On his way out of town, he makes a routine stop at the bank and finds himself flirting with the girl behind the counter.
But his flirtation is cut short when criminals burst into the bank and shoot her right before his eyes.
In attempt to administer first aid, Brody reveals a tattoo on his upper arm. A mark that will drag him and the girl into the kind of situation he was trying to get away from. But he can’t walk away because he’s the only thing capable of keeping Taylor alive and bringing down the guys who shot her—guys who are seriously dangerous.
add-to-goodreads-button31
The inside of the bank greeted me with a blast of cold air and was just as brightly lit as the sidewalk outside. The walls in here were white and so were the glossy tile floors. I stepped through the roped off line, lining up behind several others already waiting. Four tellers stood behind the long wooden counter, each with their own computer.
It seemed like I stood in line forever and I grew irritated because I just wanted to get the hell out of here and onto the open road.
Finally it was my turn and I moved down the counter toward the last window on the end. I yanked my wallet and bank card, then looked up.
Suddenly the amount of time I waited didn’t seem like such an inconvenience. In fact, if I had known she was the person waiting for me at the end of this counter I would have waited longer.
Her light scarlet hair was long and filled with loose curls that fell over her shoulder and down her chest. Her complexion was flawless with the flush of fresh peaches and her lower lip was fuller than the top, making it appear as though she had a permanent pink pout.
“How can I help you today?” she asked, politely, glancing up with crystal green eyes. I watched them widen slightly and rich satisfaction flowed through me. I wasn’t pretty like her but I wasn’t completely lacking in the looks department.
“Hey,” I said, leaning on the counter with both my elbows. The movement brought me a little closer to her. “I need to make a withdrawal.”
She glanced down at the bank card and ID I extended between us and then back at me. I gave her a lazy smile and she cleared her throat, taking the cards. She looked them over and then her polished fingernails flew over the keyboard.
I glanced at her chest, being distracted by her nice rack but my eyes finally finding the nameplate pinned to the front of her top. Taylor.
“How much would you like to withdrawal?” she asked.
“Four hundred.”
She inputed the amount without saying anything.
“So,” I said, leaning toward her again. “You come here often?”
She rolled her eyes, but a small smile played on her lips. “Just the days I feel like earning a paycheck.”
I grinned. “Paychecks are overrated.” I drawled. “I’m going fishing.”
“Says the man with a huge bank account,” she quipped. Then she winced and looked up. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t-”
I laughed. The chagrin on her face and the way her cheeks bloomed with bright pink spots was entirely amusing. “Never said I didn’t work, just said I thought it was over rated.”
She relaxed when she realized I didn’t give a rats ass that she knew how much was in my account. “You should bait your hook with hot dogs. Fish love them.”
She was right, surprise rippled through me. “You can’t tell me a girl like you likes to fish.”
“And what,” she asked, arching a red brow in my direction, “is a girl like me?” she hit a couple keys and the little dispenser to my right started flinging out cash.
“You’re withdrawal is to your right.” she said professionally.
I let the cash sit there. “Are you a tomboy in disguise?” I whispered conspiratorially. I enjoyed the emotion, the animation that played over her features. She was beautiful that was no doubt but it seemed that she also had a lot beneath that pretty exterior.
“Don’t tell anyone,” she whispered back handing me a receipt. Her teeth were really white and really straight. I got this sudden craving to run my tongue along their smooth surface.
“You’re secret is safe with me.” I tore my eyes away to pocket the cash, not bothering to count it. Oddly, I trusted her. I never trusted anyone.
Behind me a loud banging sound boomed through the room and I tensed, spinning on my heels. Four guys pushed through the entrance, each of them pulling out a gun.
I couldn’t even get away from this shit on vacation.
Adrenaline spiked my system and began pumping through my veins and accelerating my heart. It didn’t take an idiot to guess why they were here. This was a bank and they had guns. I looked over my shoulder at Taylor who was watching the men with wide eyes.
“Get down!” I ordered quietly. “Hide. Hide good.”

Book Title: Beneath the Surface
  Author: Miranda Rae Carter
  Genre: YA Paranormal
Release Date: October 22, 2013
Adolescence hasn’t been fun for Liss Lawrence. And after a year in Vancouver, when she’s finally adjusted to her new situation, a freak car accident sends her life spinning out of control and crashing into the world of the malions, a hidden race silently helping humanity from secret enclaves underground. Liss’s knowledge of the malions endangers her family when Jaredsons Securities takes an interest in her accident. Few know the men of Jaredsons Securities, an international intelligence company specializing in missing persons cases, are actually the Vykhars, ancient malion enemies whose true purpose is the eradication of the malion race. The Vykhars will stop at nothing to discover if Liss is connected with the malions, and if they do, they will exploit her. Perhaps more dangerous still are Liss’s growing feelings for Rion, a strong-willed malion scarred by his encounters with Vykhars and carrying a secret that could destroy their relationship. But Liss has a secret and scars of her own, and Rion’s fiercely protective nature threatens to tear them back open. Can this pair of unlikely lovers survive the dangers of the Vykhars? And can their love survive their own misconceptions?

As my door closed, I rolled onto my side and looked at the bag on the floor again. Rion had put himself, his entire family, and Abby, at risk for me, a complete stranger, and instead of feeling glad to be home, I felt horrible. I took a deep breath and pushed myself up to sitting. It took every bristle of strength I had to get up to walk over to that bag of clothes; not just because of my sore muscles, but because they reminded me of him, and the problems I’d created when I insisted that he let me go. I poured them onto the carpet, sat down beside them, and hugged them as tight as I could. I hadn’t even taken a second to think about what I was doing, it was automatic. I think I was craving some sort of comfort after everything that had happened this weekend, and holding those clothes was like holding onto the part of me I’d left behind. I pulled the clothes closer to my face, and took a deep breath in—they still smelled of him. My heart began to pound. Pine, leather, and that musty underground smell of his world had me roiling inside. It was so strong. I inhaled again, recalling the moment Rion had smiled at me. It wasn’t forced, we had actually connected, and when he carried me in his arms, I felt awkward, but safe…and so warm. I desperately wanted to feel that way again; I wanted to know everything was going to be all right again. And then I heard something crinkle. I ripped open the pile of clothes and found the paper in the pocket of my jeans, and though the letters were difficult to decipher at first, I managed to read his messy, all-capitals chicken-scratch.
YOU WILL BE WATCHED CLOSELY. IF I SENSE ANY DANGER, I AM COMING FOR YOU.
778-995-8884
I sat there staring at the words, confused, because he said that we couldn’t have any further contact. I read the note again and realized it was the vykhars he was warning me about. I shoved everything back into the plastic bag and opened my closet door. Rion’s scent was all over the clothes, and I needed to find a safe place to store them. In a few months, when everything settled down, I’d put them into a donation bin. I took out an old backpack, shoved the bag in and threw it to the back of my closet. When they were securely covered by three layers of last summer’s wardrobe, and I felt satisfied that they were hidden well enough, I slumped down on my bed. Even though I was completely exhausted, I couldn’t shut my mind off. When I thought about Mom, I had no doubt that coming home was the right decision, but I had no idea how messed up my life would become. Everyone’s life had been put on hold this weekend because of me: my parents missed work and I’d worried them sick, Katherine cut all ties with me, I had driven the best doctor in B.C. into hiding, I still hadn’t faced police questioning, I was apparently going to be watched closely by these vykhars, and, oh yes, I still had to go back to school and face my peers.

Too hot to handle… Faith Miller has faith in two things—her surrogate firehouse family, and her own two hands—and she needs a man in her life like a fish needs a bicycle. Growing up watching her mom get used and discarded by one deadbeat boyfriend after another has left Faith jaded, and determined not to fall into the same trap. But when Mick Whitehouse moves back to Summerville, Faith’s happy, single life is turned upside down. The hunky carpenter is a far cry from the little boy she used to wrestle with on the playground in elementary school. Mick’s all grown up, tempting as sugar coated sin, and determined to seduce Faith into forgetting all her rules. One kiss under the mistletoe and Mick Whitehouse knows that he wants Faith Miller. Bad. After years of lukewarm relationships with the wrong kind of girls, Mick is powerfully drawn to Summerville’s only female firefighter, and determined not to let her push him away. Beneath Faith’s tough exterior is a heart of gold, and the chemistry between them is four-alarm hot. But just as he finally convinces Summerville’s most confirmed bachelorette to take a chance on love, an old girlfriend waltzes into town and drops a bombshell in Mick’s lap. As Faith and Mick come to terms with the shocking news, Faith must choose: let fear of repeating her mother’s mistakes send her running, or have faith in the man she’s come to love?

“You,” Faith said with a disgusted shake of her head, her tone inferring that finding Mick starting across the street toward her was only slightly less disgusting than discovering she’d stepped in a steaming pile of dog doo. “What are you doing here?” “I live above the bakery now.” Mick forced a smile, refusing to take Faith’s scowl at face value. She’d acted irritated with him at the Fireman’s Ball, too, but she’d also kissed him like his mouth contained the last gasp of air in a burning building. Things weren’t always what they seemed with Faith, which was part of the reason he found her so damned interesting. “Great,” she said with a sigh, swinging her backpack over one shoulder. “When did that happen?” “Last week, right after the store opened.” Mick stepped onto the sidewalk beside her. “And not long after Jake and Naomi got engaged. A lot of things have changed while you’ve been gone.” Faith snorted in a way that Mick found inexplicably sexy. “Duh. I knew that was going to happen. I knew before anyone. I have a phantom limb that tingles when people are getting ready to get hitched, and it was tingling big time for those two.” Mick grinned. “A phantom limb?” “Yes,” she said, standing up straighter, her posture making it clear she wasn’t in the mood to be teased, which of course only made Mick want to tease her more. “So, where was this limb before it became a phantom, marriage-foretelling limb?” he asked, letting his eyes roam up and down Faith’s body, disturbed to realize that he found her sexier in orange pants and an oversized jacket than he’d found Nina in her skimpy dress. “Was it a third arm, or a third leg?” “It was a vestigial tail,” she said with a straight face. “And I know you don’t want to come on to a girl who used to have a tail, so take a step back, Whitehouse.” “I wouldn’t care if you still had a tail, Miller,” he said, ambling closer, until their frosty breath mingled between their faces. “I’d still want to take you out.” Faith’s eyes narrowed. “Stop it,” she said in a softer voice. “We talked about this.” “We did not,” Mick said, deliberately playing dumb. “I don’t remember any talk about your tail. If I had, I would have asked Maddie to knit you a tail warmer instead of that horrible vest she made me for Christmas.” Faith’s lips quirked up at the edges. It was a flicker of a smile, but enough to give Mick hope. “Come on,” he said. “Give me a chance. Let me take you and your tail out to dinner.” “I never had a tail, and I certainly don’t have one now,” she said, then added after a beat, “As for the other…I appreciate the offer, but I’m not interested.” “Liar,” Mick said, knowing he was right when Faith’s eyes widened and a spark flickered in their warm brown depths. “I think you’re interested,” he continued. “And I think if I kissed you right now, you’d kiss me back the way you did at the ball.”

Jessie Evans gave up a career as an international woman of mystery to write the sassy, Southern romances she always wanted to read. She’s married to the man of her dreams, and together they’re raising a few adorable, mischievous children in a tree house in the boonies. She grew up in rural Arkansas, spending summers running wild, being chewed by chiggers, and now appreciates her home in a chigger-free part of the world even more. When she’s not writing, Jessie enjoys playing her dulcimer (badly), sewing the worlds ugliest quilts to give to her friends, going for bike rides with her house full of boys, and wandering the woods, glass of wine and camera both in hand, on the lookout for Bigfoot. A southern girl, born and bred, Jessie loves writing Southern romances with just the right amount of sizzle, and hopes you’ll enjoy her stories set in the fictional town of Summerville, Georgia.
